On your travel to Detroit, you'd soon find out that the best way to get around is by car. However, the city of Detroit also has an excellent railway network and is well connected with the rest of the nation through trains.

For convenient transportation within the city limits, there are quite a few train services available. Of these, the most popular and widely used service is provided by Amtrak which operates inter-city rail services from the Amtrak Station on Baltimore Avenue West, located towards the northern end of the downtown Detroit.

While the service does not provide all the facilities that one might expect, it's a fairly decent train service and includes telephones, toilets and hire-a-car services. Amtrak covers 21,000 route miles spanning across 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces and the service operates more than 300 trains every day at speeds up to 150 mph reaching more than 500 destinations.

Amtrak offers extensive online booking facilities through their official website. It lets the user not only book tickets and plan journeys well in advance, but also provides updated timetables, essential travel information and various journey deals.

Detroit is also directly connected with Cleveland and Chicago and it usually takes about 7 hours to reach these destinations by rail. Other important cities of the US, such as Washington, New York and Los Angeles can be reached via Chicago and Cleveland. Opt for a train journey only if you have plenty of time to spare.
