Go Boating Detroit - A Special Guide to Kayaking the Detroit River in a Day

Kayaking the Detroit River can be an experience of the lifetime. It is an amazing fun sport that can take 5-8 hours to be completed. However, this length depends on the time you spend on sightseeing and on taking rest in between. This river runs through Windsor Ontario, Michigan and Detroit. While kayaking you will have to cover 50 kilometers.

Detroit River is divided into three sections - the upper section, the middle section and the lower section. You will come across various beautiful sites as you kayak down the river. If you start with the upper section, you will have to row to west from east. The westerly winds blowing against the current offers remarkable waves for kayaking. The first point is the Kayak Cove which you will come across while kayaking. This section provides an amazing access to the mouth of Detroit River.

You will arrive at the Peche Island Nature Park after crossing the Cove. The creek flowing underneath the bridge will take you to the island interior where you will find Bald eagles and great Horned Owl. When you row past this, you will reach Belle Island which is located on the American side. Navigate your kayak through the connecting channel and you will arrive at the Detroit Boat Club and the Detroit Yatch Club.

From this point, continue rowing through the west side until you arrive at the end of the island. Start eastward from here and arrive at the International Peace Fountain. From here you can again row back to Kayak Cove and complete a single day's trip on the Detroit River MI.
