History

The city has derived its name from the Detroit River. The city was developed from a French fort and missionary outpost in 1701 and is now one among the largest American cities. It was incorporated as a city in 1815 and was the capital of Michigan from 1805 to 1847. The place was formerly referred to as Fort Detroit and the name was shortened to Detroit during the French and Indian War when the British troops gained control.

With the expansion of the city, the streets were developed according to the plans of Chief Justice of the Michigan Territory, Augustus B. Woodward. With its location along the Great Lakes waterway, the city became a transportation hub.

Since the 1830s, the city has grown with the rise of shipbuilding, shipping and manufacturing companies. The city is also considered to be the birthplace of the mass-production car industry and known as the automobile capital of the world.
