Historic Fort Wayne

On your Detroit Michigan travel, get ready for a close tete-a-tete with history at the Historic Fort Wayne. Located at the end of Livernois Avenue in the Delray neighborhood of Detroit, the Fort is situated on the Detroit River overlooking the British Canadian shore about a mile away.

What makes it such a curious historical destination is the fact many of the old structures can still be found about its premises such as the original 1848 limestone barracks and the 1845 star fortification. There are more barracks along with officers' quarters, shops, hospital, recreation building, guard house, commissary, garage and stables to be seen on the fort grounds.

The Historic Fort Wayne occupies a total area of 96 acres of which 83 acres that includes the original star fort, is being maintained by the Detroit city municipality and the rest of the premises is used by the Army Corps of Engineers as a boatyard. The majority of the Fort today is operated by the Detroit Recreation Department, with help from the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition, the Friends of Fort Wayne and the Detroit Historical Society.

The Fort today is one of the historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Fort is open to all visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. on Sunday. There are parking facilities available for a nominal charge of $5.00. The best thing is that there are no charges for those who wish to explore the historic venue all by themselves. There are also paid guided-tours which are highly recommended if your history is a bit rusty. Visitors are provided with a brochure upon entering the park which has the self-guided tour map. You can also ask your Detroit travel guide for more details.
