Gem Theater Detroit

Gem Theater is one of the best known addresses on Madison Avenue in downtown Detroit. Gem Theater finds a venerated mention in every Detroit travel guide resource and is among the most significant addresses for the performing arts sector.

The Gem Theatre was built in 1927, and today, it features a bi-level theater with a traditional seating arrangement comprising rows and aisles along with a more intimate stage-level seating arrangement at cabaret tables. It shares a common lobby with another very famous and well-known traditional entertainment House, the cabaret styled Century Theatre which was built in 1903. The Theater reflects a style inspired by the Spanish Revival architectural style and got included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The Gem Theater has undergone many changes in its name and in its repertoire. In 1928, it was known as the Little Theater. It became the Rivoli in 1932, the Europa in 1935, the Cinema in 1936 and the Vanguard Playhouse in 1960. The name Gem was given to it in 1967 and it came to be used as an adult movie house. It closed down in 1978 but reopened again in 1990 under the initiative of property developer Charles Forbes. It underwent a major rehauling and the thoroughly refurbished Gem Theater finally started operating again in 1990.

After the show, indulge in some fine dining pleasures at the Century Grille Restaurant or the Elwood Bar & Grill. If you are planning to travel to Detroit Mi, keep aside an evening on your itinerary to visit the famous Gem Theater. After the Music Hall, this is your best chance for a fulfilling cultural evening in Detroit.
