Detroit Public Library
The Detroit Public Library is one of the best known landmarks in the city of Detroit. More than just the city, the Detroit Public Library, or DPL, as it is often conveniently referred to, is a pride of the entire state of Michigan by being its largest library system.
The central building which houses the main Library is located on Woodward Avenue and chiefly consists of administrative offices for the library. However, there are 23 other branches located at various points across the city.
A frequent inclusion on any Detroit Michigan travel plan, the Main Library building is an officially declared heritage building and part of the National Register of Historic Places. Its location on Woodward Street finds itself just across the street from another famous Detroit landmark, the Detroit Institute of Arts and beside the popular Wayne State University campus.
The Detroit Public Library was constructed in 1921 by Cass Gilbert, the chide architect behind the United States Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C., employing Vermont marble and Italian marble in a distinctive Italianate architecture style. Additional wings to the main building were added later by his son, Cass Gilbert, Jr. in 1963.
The DPL today is an independent, municipal corporation funded publicly. The Detroit Public Schools Board of Education appoints the members for the DPL Commission to govern the entire library system. The Library itself boasts of a huge collection of books and magazines, along with a staggering opus of electronic and digital media such as CDs, DVDs and video. Among its most famous collections are the Clarence M. Burton Historical Collection, the Hackley Collection and the National Automotive History Collection.
The Information Place or the TIP offer community information and referral service free of cost to the residents of DeGtroit on a wide range of matters like housing, transportation, food, financial aid, academics and education, legal advice, family and health care.
All Detroit travel deals will probably include a small trip to this amazing library system. If you don't have it on your itinerary, ask for it.
