Cranbrook House and Gardens

The NY Times Magazine called it "The most enchanted and enchanting settling in America". It's also one of the best known tourist destinations in Detroit, Michigan. Any guesses? Well, I'm talking about the Cranbrook House and Gardens.

If you've been reading up on Detroit travel lately, you already know something about this notable landmark. In case you don't, here's a crash course. Cranbrook is a cultural, educational and religious complex (the National Historic Landmark campus) that houses six autonomous institutions with countless outbuildings and gardens, all located on a beautifully maintained campus that stretches for 300 acres. These include Christ Church, Meeting House, Cranbrook House, Cranbrook School for Boys, Kingswood School for Girls, Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Cranbrook Institute of Science.

One can enjoy many immaculately maintained remains of a period long gone by. Most of the architecture features Tudor and Gothic elements that seem to reflect a very distinctive English collegiate inspiration, curiously interspersed with some rather elegant Modernistic structures. The surrounding landscape complements the motley architectural structures perfectly and makes the entire campus a veritable showcase of a wide range of architectural styles from the early part of the last century. Just the perfect ingredients to make your Detroit, Mi travel truly a memorable experience.

The Cranbrook House was designed in 1908 by the famous Detroit-based architect Albert Kahn. The House is an adorable example of English Arts and Crafts-styled architecture and was the home George Gough Booth and Ellen Scripps Booth, the founders of Cranbrook.

The Cranbrook gardens exude a charm very much its own. Spread over 40 acres of the entire campus, the garden is home to many species of plants and flowers. There are smaller themed gardens as well, such as the exotic Oriental Garden. The gardens remain open to the public from the beginning of May to the end of October and provide excellent facilities for guided tours if you are not too keen on exploring all by yourself. It is definitely a not-to-miss place in your Detroit Michigan travel.
